Sempri fi Painting - Copy

Semper Fi is now finished.  This picture was taken during the protest of the proposed mosque at the foot of the World Trade Center in NYC.

We saw many veterans there, but this man really caught my eye… I call this “Semper Fi.”

I’m in the final stages of the a painting.  This is where “the rubber meets the road”  and the paint meets the paper.

In this stage, the intricate details come into play and will either make or break the painting.

The reflections of the cars are like jewels and offset the massive overpass, creating a delicate balance.

It was very exciting to capture the energy of Times Square with the graphic intensity of the advertisements impacting on the people. It was especially interesting to me growing up in New York and always being part of the Times Square experience and how it has changed through the years.

Raymond's on Church St.
Raymond’s on Church Street was especially wonderful to paint since it brought back
memories of visiting Paris with Valerie over 20 years ago.  The late afternoon sunlight
coming through the trees and casting those beautiful shadows was very captivating
and inspirational.  I am grateful for the acknowledgement of the piece by my fellow
artists at the NJ Pastel Society.

The most striking image should always have impact whether it’s strong lighting a graphic depiction of a subject matter, place, or person.  The painting has to grab you and make a statement.  The best images always convey a feeling, which
is always my goal.
At this stage of the painting, my challenge is whether to put more detail in people’s faces, or leave it the way it is with the focus on the late afternoon lighting; the sun coming from behind the trees, also bleaching out the sidewalk on the right hand side casting long shadows in the foreground.  I may simplify the leaves in the upper portion of the painting.
